500th Anniversary of the First Lutheran HymnalJanuary 19, 2024

In a letter to Willibald Pirkheimer dated January 19, 1524, Georg Spalatin implied that the first Lutheran hymnal had already left the press. That hymnal was "Etlich Cristlich lider, Lobgesang, und Psalm, dem rainen wort Gotten gemeß, auß der heyligen schrifft, durch mancherley hochgelerter gemacht, in der Kirchen zu singen [Several Christian Hymns, Songs of Praise, and Psalms, Composed by Various Highly Learned Men in Accordance With the Pure Word of God on the Basis of Holy Scripture for Singing in Church]," published by Jobst Gutknecht in Nuremberg. Now called the "Achtliederbuch [Book of Eight Hymns]," it included "Dear Christians, One and All, Rejoice" (Luther), "Salvation Unto Us Has Come" (Speratus), "In God I Trust, For So I Must" (Speratus), "O God, Man’s Ruin Is So Broad and Grim" (Speratus), "O Lord, Take Pity Once You've Seen" (Luther), "The Mouth of Fools May Well Confess" (Luther), "From Depths of Woe, Lord God, I Cry" (Luther), and "In Jesus' Name We Upward Lift" (anonymous).
